Makoto Shinkai Shares First Concept Art for Your Name's 10th Anniversary
Makoto Shinkai held a very special 10th anniversary celebration for Your Name (Kimi no Na wa.), one of the biggest hits in modern anime history. The renowned director shared a concept drawing from the film's early stages on his social media account in honor of the 10th anniversary of the film's original release date in Japan. The fact that exactly ten years have passed since the film was released on August 26, 2016, was a deeply emotional moment for both Shinkai and his fans.
The illustration Shinkai shared reveals the first seeds of the film's iconic visual language. In the drawing, one can see the rawest form of the famous twilight (kataware-doki) atmosphere at the heart of Mitsuha Miyamizu and Taki Tachibana's body-swapping story, as well as the light play that has become Shinkai's signature. In his post, the director stated that this drawing was created while the film's script and visual world were still taking shape, and that it carried clues about the heart of the story at that time. Fans noted how faithful a preview the drawing was of Itomori town and the Tokyo skyline in the final film.
