Exhibition 'Origins' Highlighting Mamoru Hosoda's Career Announced: Here Are All the Details

Director Mamoru Hosoda, one of the most respected names in the anime world, is meeting his fans with a new exhibition that delves into the depths of his career and presents the most comprehensive archive to date. Organized under the name "The Origins of Mamoru Hosoda Exhibition" (Hosoda Mamoru no Genten-ten), this event is being brought to life to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the director's masterpiece, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. An official key visual and ticket sales details have been shared for the exhibition, which will take place at the Creative Museum Tokyo in Tokyo from June 20 to August 31, 2026.
The exhibition will showcase Hosoda's development not only as a director but also as a visual artist. Visitors will have the chance to go behind the scenes of works such as Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and the Oscar-nominated Mirai. The shared key visual brings together iconic scenes from the films amidst e-konte (storyboards) and character designs, in a composition reminiscent of Hosoda's own desk. This visual offers an atmosphere that emphasizes the "craftsmanship" and meticulousness of the director's creative process.
Director Mamoru Hosoda expressed his feelings about the exhibition in a statement: "'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,' which I set out to make with the desire to create a film on my own, was the biggest turning point of my directing career. The fact that that small journey, which started in only 6 theaters, has reached so many people today is my greatest source of motivation." Coming after the international success of Hosoda's latest film, The Endless Scarlet (Hateshinaki Scarlet), released in 2025, this exhibition aims to build a bridge between the artist's past and future.
Within the scope of the exhibition, never-before-seen original drawings, background art, and production notes will be displayed in the largest-scale collection to date. Additionally, it was announced that, concurrently with the exhibition, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will be re-released in theaters across Japan in a 4K version for the first time. Following the Tokyo run, the exhibition is planned to move to Osaka in the fall of 2026 and to Fukuoka in early 2027. Ticket sales will begin on April 18, 2026, and special ticket options with gifts will also be available for fans.
