Japan's Legendary Anime "Manga Nihon Banashi" Comes to the Stage: Norika Fujiwara to Star!

One of the most deep-rooted and beloved productions in Japanese television history, the 1975 classic anime series Manga Nihon Banashi (Manga Japanese Folktales), is being moved to the theater stage in a surprising decision. Scheduled to premiere in August 2026, this new stage adaptation will star famous Japanese actress Norika Fujiwara and child star-turned-social media phenomenon Nonoka Murakata. This exciting collaboration aims to bring together nostalgia enthusiasts and new-generation viewers in the magical world of traditional Japanese folktales.
First broadcast on January 7, 1975, Manga Nihon Banashi is known for telling folktales, legends, and mythological stories collected from all over Japan with its unique minimalist animation style. The series, which continued until 1994 and reached a total of more than 1400 episodes, was etched in memories especially with the iconic voice acting of Etsuko Ichihara and Shinpei Ozawa. The anthology-format production, in which a different story is handled in each episode, played a key role for decades in helping Japanese children learn their cultural heritage.
The cast of the stage play doubles the interest in the project. Norika Fujiwara, whom we will watch in the lead role, is known as one of the most respected names in the Japanese entertainment industry with both her modeling and acting career. Accompanying her is Nonoka Murakata (Nono-chan), a talent who gained worldwide fame with a singing competition she entered when she was only two years old and is one of Japan's youngest professional singers. How this duo will transfer the warm and sincere narrative language of the original anime to the stage has already become a subject of great curiosity.
This stage adaptation is seen not only as a nostalgia project but also as part of an effort to keep Japan's oral traditions alive through modern art forms. Although it is not yet clear whether the famous opening and closing songs of Manga Nihon Banashi will be included in the stage performance, fans are already excited for the August shows. Ticket sales and exact screening dates for the project will be announced through official channels in the coming months. This production, where classic tales will come to life with live performance, promises an experience that serves as a tribute to the roots of the anime world.
