McDonald's Japan and Mobile Suit Gundam Collaboration: Amuro and Char Face Off for Chicken Tatsuta!

McDonald's Japan is crowning its classic Chicken Tatsuta menu, eagerly awaited every spring, with a massive collaboration this year. The new advertising campaign, which will begin airing across Japan on April 14, brings the iconic characters of the legendary Mobile Suit Gundam series to the screen. Featuring entirely new animation scenes produced by the series' original studio Sunrise (now known as Bandai Namco Filmworks), the campaign promises moments filled with nostalgia for fans.
In the commercial prepared for this special campaign, the universe's eternal rivals Amuro Ray and Char Aznable face off not on the battlefield, but for McDonald's beloved chicken burgers. The Chicken Tatsuta and the new Yuzu Koshō Chicken Tatsuta menus will be served in specially designed packaging inspired by the Gundam universe. The red-themed packaging, prepared especially for Char Aznable fans, includes references to the character's nickname, the "Red Comet," and his famous "three times faster" motto.
Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, once again proving its unshakable place in Japanese pop culture. The series, which fundamentally changed the mecha genre and pioneered the "Real Robot" subgenre, is more than just an anime; it also boasts a massive model kit (Gunpla) industry. This collaboration with McDonald's serves as an important example of the series' power to reach wide audiences and how deeply intertwined Japan's fast-food culture is with the world of anime.
For fans, this campaign is not just about a delicious meal; it also means exclusive digital content and collectible packaging available for a limited time. McDonald's Japan's Char's Custom menu, which was held in 2022, received great attention. This new collaboration is expected to have a similar impact and create long queues at restaurants throughout the campaign period. If you happen to be in Japan during those dates, don't forget to take your place in this flavor war between Amuro and Char!
