MediaOCD Adds Major Titles Like Urusei Yatsura and Black Rock Shooter to the Discotek Deep Dives Project

MediaOCD has announced an exciting update for physical media enthusiasts, adding major new titles to its Discotek Deep Dives project. This expansion includes significant works such as the Urusei Yatsura film series, the Black Rock Shooter anime, and the live-action Fatal Frame (Zero) film, which is based on the cult horror game series. The project highlights the technical effort behind the Blu-ray and DVD releases of these works, specifically for collectors.
Discotek Deep Dives was launched in January 2026 as an initiative by the MediaOCD team, founded by industry veteran Justin Sevakis. The platform details how classics released by Discotek Media are restored, how image quality is improved, and the technical challenges encountered during the process. The core goal of the initiative is to make physical media products—which major retailers like Crunchyroll have begun removing from their catalogs—accessible to fans and to provide transparent documentation on the preservation process of these works.
Among the 27 new titles added in the April 2026 update, there is a detail that both delights and disappoints Urusei Yatsura fans. While films 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6, along with the OVA collection, have been included in the project, Beautiful Dreamer (the 2nd film), directed by the legendary Mamoru Oshii, remains excluded from this selection due to license renewal issues. On the other hand, works like Black Rock Shooter, brought to life with huke's designs, and Ghost Stories (Gakkou no Kaidan), known for its legendary "gag dub," await enthusiasts with their technical details.
This expansion proves once again how critical the "archival" culture is in the anime world. MediaOCD serves not only as a sales platform but also as an educational resource explaining how works like Medabots, Reborn!, and Kamen Rider Black are transferred from analog sources to the modern Blu-ray format. In an era where physical media is resisting digital platforms, such technical documentation allows fans to understand the true value of the products they purchase. It is stated that 20-30 new titles will continue to be added every month in the coming months.
