Ibitte Konai Gibo to Gishi Anime Starts in July: First Trailer and New Details Arrive!

There is exciting news from the Ibitte Konai Gibo to Gishi (My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked) anime, which completely flips the familiar "wicked stepmother and stepsisters" theme from Cinderella tales on its head! The series' official website announced that the highly anticipated production will meet audiences in July 2026. Thanks to the first teaser trailer shared, we had the chance to hear our characters' voices for the first time, and a new key visual reflecting the series' heartwarming atmosphere was also presented to fans.
Our story focuses on the character Mio, who expects to be mistreated by her new family but instead encounters excessive love and attention. Along with the trailer, a new name added to the cast has been revealed: the family's loyal and adorable dog, Gungnir, will be voiced by experienced voice actor Anna Mugiho. The previously announced cast includes successful names such as Shiori Mikami (Mio), Naomi Shindo (Stepmother Shizue), Rena Hasegawa (Misaki), and Ayasa Ito (Arisa). The production is directed by Toshinori Watanabe, with animations by Studio ENGI.
In fact, this series became a huge phenomenon with the short stories that mangaka Otsuji shared on Twitter and Pixiv platforms. This "twist" comedy, which stole the hearts of readers, was later serialized in Ichijinsha's Comic Rex magazine. Instead of traditional dramatic family conflicts, the series' greatest feature that sets it apart from its peers is its portrayal of the funny adventures of an overly doting and protective family. Especially the process of the main character Mio mistaking every kind gesture from her family for a "method of torture" while realizing how much she is actually loved promises viewers plenty of laughter.
Starting in July, this production is a candidate to be one of the favorites of the summer season, especially for those who love "healing" (iyashikei) genre anime. With its script that breaks clichés and the visual quality of Studio ENGI, Ibitte Konai Gibo to Gishi seems likely to please both followers of the original manga and new viewers. We expect more details regarding the exact release date and the opening/ending songs to arrive in the coming weeks.
