Netflix to Release 'Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe' on August 31
Netflix is preparing to add the sequel to one of the most ambitious anime projects in the Universal Century universe to its library. According to Anime News Network, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe will be released on the platform on August 31, 2026. Netflix also released an English-dubbed promotional trailer for the film. This move shows that the film will be shown not only in Japan but also worldwide.
The second film forms the middle chapter of a trilogy based on Yoshiyuki Tomino's 1989 novel Hathaway's Flash. The series' first film, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, was produced by Sunrise in 2021 under the direction of Shukou Murase. The story, considered a classic continuation of Tomino's universe, focuses on events following Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack. Thus, the political conflicts of the Universal Century calendar are reinterpreted through a darker generational clash.
At the center of the story is Hathaway Noa, the son of Bright Noa, whom viewers know from Char's Counterattack. The young pilot turns his back on the Earth Federation, which his father served, and joins a resistance organization called Mafty. There, he becomes the pilot of the Xi Gundam and launches a radical war against the Federation's oppressive rule. The phrase Nymph Circe in the film's title stands out as a reference to the universe's mythological and mystical aspects.
Netflix's move is also critical for the visibility of the Gundam series in the Western market. The first film was made available globally via Netflix almost immediately after its theatrical release in 2021, and it caught the attention of audiences who follow Japanese anime films digitally. The Sunrise production now continues under the umbrella of Bandai Namco Filmworks, which is seen as part of the long-term plans for the Gundam brand. The distribution of the second film is expected to happen through this successful collaboration.
For fans, the only question for now is when and where the trilogy's final film will be shown. Netflix's inclusion of the first two films suggests that a similar path may be followed for the finale. August 31 is a date not to be missed for both longtime Gundam viewers and those new to Universal Century stories.
