New Anime Announcement from Ghost in the Shell: Science SARU and Maaya Sakamoto Voice Motoko Kusanagi

One of the cornerstones of science fiction, the Ghost in the Shell universe returns to screens with a completely different interpretation by Science SARU studio. According to the official announcement, in the new anime project, famous voice actress Maaya Sakamoto will bring the main character Motoko Kusanagi to life with her voice. This means a completely new voice cast and visual style, distinct from all previous adaptations of the series.
Science SARU is a studio that has proven its original animation approach in recent years with projects like Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, and Inu-Oh. This new Ghost in the Shell, bearing the signature of studio founders Masaaki Yuasa and Eunyoung Choi, will combine the series' dark cyberpunk atmosphere with Science SARU's fluid, experimental drawings. Additionally, the music is expected to be composed by names the studio frequently works with.
The series' roots lie in Masamune Shirow's 1989 manga of the same name. Ghost in the Shell, which became a global phenomenon with Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, later expanded with the Stand Alone Complex anime series and many spin-off films. In all previous Japanese adaptations, Motoko Kusanagi was voiced by Atsuko Tanaka; therefore, the selection of Maaya Sakamoto is a significant change for fans. Sakamoto is known for roles such as Shiki Ryougi in Kara no Kyoukai and Mari Illustrious in Evangelion: 3.0, and has a wide vocal range.
Currently, there is no official announcement regarding the project's release date, episode count, or the story to be adapted. The announcement being limited only to cast and studio details indicates that production is still in an early stage. However, this initiative, which will bring a fresh breath to Ghost in the Shell's over 30-year history, seems to excite both old fans and those who love Science SARU's innovative style. In the coming months, we can expect more visuals, character introductions, and possibly a teaser trailer.
