New Ghost in the Shell Anime Selected for Annecy 2026 Festival: The Sci-Fi Legend Returns

One of the most iconic series in the cyberpunk world, Ghost in the Shell, is preparing to greet its fans with a brand-new television series. The highly anticipated The Ghost in the Shell (Kōkaku Kidōtai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL) anime, produced by the Science SARU studio, has been officially selected for the "Special Events" category of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, one of the world's most prestigious animation events. The festival, which will take place in France from June 21-27, 2026, is planning special screenings and presentations about the production process that will excite fans of the series.
This new adaptation is described not just as a sequel, but as what series creator Masamune Shirow calls "the first step of the second generation." In the director's chair is Mokochan (Toma Kimura), known for successful work on projects such as Dan Da Dan and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The screenplay is written by award-winning science fiction author EnJoe Toh. On the visual design side, Shuhei Handa promises a world that is more faithful to the aesthetic of Shirow's original 1989 manga, vibrant and detailed. It is stated that this version will offer visuals closer to classic manga lines rather than previous 3DCG attempts.
The Ghost in the Shell universe turned into a global phenomenon with Mamoru Oshii's cult film in 1995, and subsequently expanded with different visions such as Stand Alone Complex and Arise. This new series, the tenth major animation project in total, will reinterpret the struggle of Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team against cybercrime with a modern animation language. In particular, how Science SARU's unique dynamic and fluid style will blend with the series' philosophical depth and technological complexity has become a subject of great curiosity within the community.
The anime, which will begin airing in July 2026, will be available to viewers worldwide (excluding Russia and China) exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The inclusion of names like Taisei Iwasaki, Ryo Konishi, and Yuki Kanesaka on the music side already proves the atmospheric power of the series. While this official selection at Annecy is considered a major indicator of prestige ahead of the series' global release, fans are eagerly awaiting the first exclusive footage and detailed information to come from the festival.
