GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka is returning with a brand-new live-action adaptation of one of the most iconic manga in Japanese pop culture. According to Anime News Network, the first trailer and a new visual have been released for the upcoming series. This will be the third major live-action attempt of Fujisawa's series, which was published between 1997 and 2002 and gained millions of fans worldwide.
The trailer features fast-paced cuts introducing Eikichi Onizuka, a former motorcycle gang member who touches his students' lives with his unconventional methods. Producers stated that this new adaptation focuses more on today's youth issues and will bring some side stories from the original manga to the screen for the first time. The visual shows a familiar shot of Onizuka standing in front of the class in his signature T-shirt and hat.
Let's go back a bit: Fujisawa's manga was first adapted into a drama series in 1998 starring Takashi Sorimachi, which broke ratings records in Japan.
