New Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Anime Announced: Part of Kenji Kamiyama's Multimedia Project
The legendary world of the Gundam series is expanding further with a brand new anime. The production titled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO has been announced as part of the famous director Kenji Kamiyama's multimedia project “RG”. This project will tackle the Gundam universe not only through anime but also in different formats such as games, manga, and possibly model kits.
Kamiyama is known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, and most recently the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash film series. This new project bearing his signature has been a big surprise for Gundam fans in particular. Although the meaning of the letters RG has not yet been fully explained, it is speculated that it could be a reference to the “Real Grade” model series or the beginning of an entirely new sub-universe.
Starting in 1979, the Mobile Suit Gundam series has produced dozens of different timelines, side stories, and spin-offs. While the Universal Century main timeline is the most popular, in recent years independent universes such as Gundam: The Witch from Mercury have also garnered great interest. It is eagerly awaited which timeline this new project will take place in. The name XARX-ZERO may herald an unconventional approach both in mecha design and story.
The multimedia structure of the project is also in line with Gundam’s recent strategy. Bandai Namco and Sunrise have focused on simultaneously expanding the Gundam series across games, films, and digital platforms in recent years. Kenji Kamiyama directing this project signals that quality and adult themes will be at the forefront. No official announcement has been made yet regarding the production's release date and cast. However, more details are expected to be shared in the coming months.
