New Sword Art Online Film “Integral Domain” Announced: Release in 2028

Sword Art Online universe continues to expand. According to the official announcement at the Anime Japan event, the new film “Integral Domain” will be released in 2028. The film will take place immediately after the Alicization arc and focus on Kirito and his friends' new digital adventure.
With the announcement, the film's cast and staff were also revealed. Ayako Kōno, who previously directed Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale and the Progressive films, is in the director's chair. As screenwriter, it was reported that series creator Reki Kawahara himself contributed. The animation studio will again be A-1 Pictures. The voice cast includes familiar names, notably Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Kirito) and Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna).
The film's title “Integral Domain” is interpreted as a reference to the mathematical and system-based structure of Underworld. The Alicization arc was one of the deepest and most beloved stories in the series, particularly dealing with themes of artificial intelligence, consciousness, and digital immortality. The new film is expected to take these themes even further. While the previous film Ordinal Scale (2017) presented an original story tied to the series, the Progressive films retold the early floors of Aincrad. Integral Domain will serve as a direct continuation of the main story.
The Sword Art Online light novel series by Reki Kawahara has been published since 2009 and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. With its anime adaptations, games, and films, it boasts a huge global fan base. Integral Domain will maintain the dark and philosophical tone of Alicization while focusing on a new threat in Underworld and Kirito's test of leadership. Producers stated that the film will be "the series' most ambitious production."
For fans, this film is especially important for those curious about what happened in Underworld after the end of Alicization. Although the official release date is 2028, trailers and new visuals are expected to be released in the coming months. As we approach the 10th anniversary of Sword Art Online, Integral Domain heralds both nostalgia and a new beginning.
