Ninja Scroll 4K Trailer Showcases Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Hand-Drawn Action Ahead of Re-screenings

One of the most important action productions of the '90s in the anime world, Ninja Scroll, is back on the agenda with its 4K restoration. The official trailer released recently showcases every detail of director Yoshiaki Kawajiri's hand-drawn action. According to Anime Corner, this trailer was prepared for the film's upcoming re-screenings.

First released in Japan on June 5, 1993, Ninja Scroll (Jubei Ninpucho) is one of the classics bearing Madhouse's signature. The film tells the struggle of the wandering swordsman Jubei Kibagami, alongside the female ninja Kagero and the secret agent Dakuan, against the Eight Devils of Kimon. Kawajiri's fluid fight choreography and sharp shadow play made the film one of the most distinctive anime action films of its time. Indeed, it is often said that Ninja Scroll was among the works the Wachowski siblings showed to The Matrix team.

Kawajiri is a director known for works such as Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and the “Program” segment of The Animatrix; however, Ninja Scroll is considered his signature work. The 4K restoration highlights the vibrancy of the colors and fine line details, making the hand-drawn fight scenes—the film's most defining feature—look much more impressive on the big screen.
