Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date Announced as September 25, Nintendo Switch 2 Version Also Arrives Same Day

The release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword has finally been announced. Capcom's new entry in the classic samurai action series will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 25, 2026. The announcement is notable as it is one of the first major third-party games for Nintendo's next-generation console.
Fans of the series are part of an audience that grew up with the first three games in the early 2000s. Onimusha was a title where Capcom blended Resident Evil-like tank controls with Japanese folklore. After the HD remaster in 2018, the series fell silent. Way of the Sword returns with an entirely new story and modern gameplay. Capcom states that the game is "a tribute to the series' roots," while also promising next-gen graphics and a fluid combat system.
This release date is also a big win for the Nintendo Switch 2. Although Nintendo's new console has not been officially announced yet, industry sources predict that the Switch 2 could arrive in the second half of 2025 or early 2026. The same-day launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword shows Capcom's early support for Nintendo's new platform. Additionally, the game is said to be connected to the Onimusha anime series on Netflix; the anime provided a prequel story expanding the series' universe.
Pricing and pre-order details for the game have not yet been announced. However, Capcom is expected to hold a digital event soon to share more gameplay footage and story details. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is poised to be one of the most notable action games of 2026, appealing to both nostalgic fans and newcomers to the series.
