Parasyte Universe Expands: Netflix's New Live-Action Series "Parasyte: Tamiya" Coming in 2027
The Parasyte universe continues to expand! Netflix has officially announced a new live-action series, Parasyte: Tamiya, set to premiere in 2027. The series will star Japan's rising star Shioli Kutsuna. Yeon Sang-ho, the planner of the highly acclaimed 2024 series Parasyte: The Grey, returns to the project in the same role. This news has excited fans of Hitoshi Iwaaki's classic manga.
Netflix aims to tell parallel stories in two different regions based on the original Parasyte manga. While Parasyte: The Grey presented a side story set in Korea, Parasyte: Tamiya will be set in Japan and will have a narrative closer to the original manga's events. The series' title is a reference to Tamiya Ryouko, an important character in the manga. Details about the character Shioli Kutsuna will portray remain under wraps. In an interview, Yeon Sang-ho said, “The Parasyte universe asks deep questions about human nature and alienation. In this new series, we will explore these themes through the lens of Japanese culture.”
As is known, the Parasyte manga was published by Hitoshi Iwaaki from 1988 to 1995 and quickly achieved cult status. In 2014, an anime adaptation titled Parasyte: The Maxim was produced. In 2024, Netflix released Parasyte: The Grey, bringing in South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho (creator of the famous Train to Busan films). The series received positive reviews from critics, standing out especially for its visual effects and body horror elements. Now, the same team returns with a brand new story set in Japan.
Netflix's heavy investment in the Parasyte brand shows the platform's commitment to original manga and anime adaptations. Parasyte: Tamiya is scheduled for release in 2027.
