Live-Action Series in Development for Persona Series at Netflix
Netflix has officially taken action to bring the popular role-playing game series Persona to life as a live-action series. According to Variety and Anime News Network, Christopher Monfette will lead the project. Monfette previously served as an executive producer and writer on Star Trek: Picard. He will also work as the showrunner and head writer for the series.
The Persona series is a JRPG legend developed by Atlus, telling stories of high school students fighting evil with supernatural powers. The games became a worldwide phenomenon with Persona 5, and have previously been adapted into anime (Persona 4: The Animation, Persona 5: The Animation) and films (Persona 3 film series). However, this will be the first time the series is adapted into a live-action format.
Considering Netflix's success with live-action video game adaptations (The Witcher, One Piece, Arcane), this news is very exciting for Persona fans. It is not yet clear which game the series will be based on, or if it will tell a completely original story. However, Monfette's screenwriting career and experience in sci-fi/drama could provide a solid foundation for the project.
The Persona series is known not only for its gameplay but also for its deep character development, social simulation mechanics, and stylized visuals. How successfully the live-action adaptation will reflect these elements remains to be seen. Among Netflix's live-action anime/game adaptations so far, One Piece received great acclaim, while Cowboy Bebop was a disappointment. Persona's fate could follow a similar path.
