The series, a product of six years of work, was brought to the screen by Studio Kai after an eight-volume light novel run and a successful manga adaptation. The author stated that he drew significant inspiration from the world-renowned flight simulation game series Ace Combat while crafting the dark and epic atmosphere of the series.

Rocket Shokai emphasized that the radio chatter in the Ace Combat games and the sense of "heroism" felt in the heat of battle specifically shaped the character dynamics in the Sentenced to Be a Hero universe.
