Special Interview with the Sentenced to Be a Hero Team at Anime Expo 2026: Director, Chief Animation Director, and Character Designer Speak Out

Sentenced to Be a Hero, the highly anticipated fantasy anime adaptation, had exciting behind-the-scenes details revealed at Anime Expo 2026. In an exclusive interview conducted by the popular Japanese media platform Anime Corner, director and creature designer Yoshiki Nakakoji, chief animation director Yasutaka Kimura, and character designer Takeru Noda provided comprehensive insights into the project.

Director Nakakoji, who also handles the series' creature designs, stated in the interview that he drew inspiration from both traditional Japanese mythology and modern horror elements while creating the monsters of this fantasy world. Nakakoji said, "I made sure there was a story behind every creature. Viewers will feel the history of these creatures not just in battle scenes, but in every encounter."

Chief animation director Yasutaka Kimura emphasized the importance they placed on the characters' emotional expressions and the fluidity of action scenes. Kimura noted that they spent a long time working on the facial expressions that reflect the protagonist's inner conflicts. "Sentenced to Be a Hero tells not only the physical journey of the hero but also their spiritual one. Therefore, every frame of the animation must carry this dual structure," he stated.

Character designer Takeru Noda explained that while they remained faithful to the illustrations of the original light novel for the clothing and weapon designs of the main cast, they made revisions to suit the dynamic nature of animation. Noda said, "It was a priority for us to preserve the characters that fans know and love. However, we simplified some details to make them look more impressive in motion."

Sentenced to Be a Hero is being adapted from the popular light novel series written by Kuma-Gen and illustrated by Mochi. The series began publication under the Kadokawa label in 2022 and quickly gained a strong fanbase. Although the studio producing the anime has not yet been officially announced, the past projects of the team members (such as Nakakoji's previous work on productions like Re:Creators) offer hope regarding the quality.

This interview highlights the importance placed on creature design and character animation. Fans have already received assurance that the series' visual identity will capture the spirit of the light novel. The Sentenced to Be a Hero anime, for which a release date has not yet been announced, is expected to meet audiences sometime in 2027.
