Shigeru Mizuki’s “White Flag” Manga to Air on NHK as Anime Special
Japan’s national broadcaster NHK will air an anime special based on the late manga master Shigeru Mizuki’s World War II manga “White Flag” on Sunday. The anime will be broadcast under NHK’s documentary series NHK Special. According to Anime News Network, this production is an important step in adapting Mizuki’s historical works about the war period for television.
Shigeru Mizuki (1922–2015) was not only a popular culture icon known for “GeGeGe no Kitaro”, but also a witness known for his anti-war lines. Seriously wounded while serving in the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II and losing his left arm, Mizuki described these experiences with striking sincerity in works such as “Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths” and “Showa: A History of Japan”. “White Flag”, as one of these war narratives, centers on the themes of surrender and survival.
The broadcast is notable in that it reinterprets Mizuki’s works based on his wartime memories in anime format. NHK’s inclusion of an animated narrative in its documentary slot lends a different perspective to war and commemoration programs in Japanese television history. Such adaptations are especially important for younger generations to access Mizuki’s testimonies.
After Mizuki’s death in 2015, his works continue to be rediscovered both in Japan and internationally. The “White Flag” anime special will carry the artist’s anti-war message to a new generation. After the program, it remains to be seen whether NHK will adapt other war stories by Mizuki into anime in its documentary content.
