Star Detective Precure! Heads to the Big Screen: Release Date Announced!
Toei Animation has officially announced the highly anticipated feature film for Star Detective Precure! (Meitantei Purikyua!), the newest entry in their long-running magical girl series. The first solo film for the series, which began its television run on February 1, 2026, will be released in theaters in Japan on September 18, 2026. The series, which is currently available for simultaneous worldwide streaming on Crunchyroll, has brought a breath of fresh air to the classic Precure formula with its detective theme and time-travel elements.
The first trailer and visual shared alongside the film's announcement provide important clues about the mysterious elements at the heart of the story. A "suncatcher" object featured in the promotional visual, which refracts light through colorful stones, is expected to play a key role in the film's plot. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that characters who have remained mysterious in the television series, such as Cure Arcana Shadow and Cure Eclair, will make their full debut in the film. Our main characters Anna Akechi (Cure Answer) and Mikuru Kobayashi (Cure Mystique) will join forces once again on the big screen to solve a much larger and more complex case.
This massive franchise, which began in 2004 with Futari wa Precure, has been presenting fans with a new theme and cast of characters every year for over 20 years. Star Detective Precure! is the 23rd main team in the series and brings together old and new generations of fans by setting its story in a nostalgic 1999 atmosphere. Directed by Koji Kawasaki, the production features a screenplay by Isao Murayama and character designs by Akane Yano. The series continues to push the boundaries of the genre by blending the Precure tradition—known for its physical combat scenes and deep themes of friendship—with detective motifs.
With the September release date, the tradition of distributing special "Miracle Lights" to audiences in Japanese theaters is also planned to continue. While no official schedule has been shared regarding the film's international release or arrival on digital platforms, given the series' global popularity, Crunchyroll is expected to share good news in the future.
