'Super Kaguya Hime!' Film to Be Re-released in 4D and Special Formats Starting September 18

A fun and action-packed adaptation of the classic Japanese folk tale Kaguya Hime (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), the original anime film 'Super Kaguya Hime!' returns to the big screen after nearly 40 years. This cult production from Toei Animation will be re-released starting September 18, 2025, in select theaters in Japan in both standard and advanced formats.
Not only in normal 2D screenings, but the film will also be available in special experience formats such as MX4D, 4DX, SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX, and Dolby Atmos, promising audiences a truly cinematic feast. Particularly the 4DX and MX4X versions add effects like seat movements, wind, and water splashes to the film's action scenes, drawing viewers into the story.
'Super Kaguya Hime!' was directed by Tomoharu Katsumata in 1987 and was etched into memory as one of the most ambitious productions of its time. The film humorously and fantastically narrates the arrival of the Moon Princess Kaguya on Earth, while also showcasing the animation quality of Toei from that era. The production, which received great interest in its original release, gained cult status over the years and holds nostalgic value especially for 80s anime fans.
This re-release is a unique opportunity for old fans to refresh childhood memories and for new generations to discover this exceptional work with modern cinema technologies. It is not yet clear whether the film will be presented in a similar event internationally after the screenings in Japan. However, considering Toei Animation's recent trend of reinvesting in its classic works, it is likely that this nostalgic surprise will spread to other countries.
A new promotional trailer (special footage) for the film will be released in the coming days. Screening schedules and ticket details will be announced through Toei Animation's official channels. This event, which anime history enthusiasts should not miss, blends the magic of classic animation with 4D technology.
