Tanuki to Kitsune Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary with a Major Anime Announcement: Coming in October 2026!

The long-awaited news for Tanuki to Kitsune fans has finally arrived! Created by artist Atamoto and having gained immense popularity worldwide, the series is getting an official television anime as part of its 10th-anniversary celebrations. According to the announcement made by Frontier Works, the cute duo's new adventures will hit screens in October 2026. This exciting development crowns the series' decade of success, and the project's first major reveal took place at the AnimeJapan 2026 event.
First starting as a web manga on X (formerly Twitter) in 2016, Tanuki to Kitsune quickly became an internet phenomenon before expanding into print media. The series, which follows the daily life on a mountain of a slightly naive and sleepy tanuki and a mischievous fox who loves to tease him, has sold over 1.3 million copies to date. Supported by three picture books in addition to the 10-volume main series, the work has managed to win the hearts of readers of all ages with its minimalist yet impressive visual style. The series also features other cute forest inhabitants such as a bear, a wolf, and a rabbit who join in on this friendship.
This is not the series' first step into the anime world; a short-episode ONA (Original Net Animation) series produced by the Lesprit studio was released on YouTube in 2018. However, the new project in 2026 is set to be a much more comprehensive television series. The interactive areas, giant fox tail decorations, and special photo spots displayed at the Frontier Works booth at AnimeJapan 2026 signaled just how meticulously produced the new anime will be. It was also emphasized at the event that the series will appeal to both children and adults with its "play together" concept.
Although detailed information about the voice cast and technical staff has not yet been shared, fans have already marked October 2026 on their calendars. How the peaceful atmosphere and unique humor of Tanuki to Kitsune will translate to television screens is a matter of great curiosity. New illustrations and special events prepared by Atamoto as part of the 10th-anniversary projects are also expected to continue throughout the year. Stay tuned to us so you don't miss the cute duo's adventures on the mountain!
