The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Gets a Second Chance: Anime Shares First Trailer, Visual, and Cast

Exciting news for isekai fans! The anime adaptation of the light novel series “The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life” (Japanese: Kaiko Sareta Cheat Majutsushi wa, Second Life wo Tanoshinderu) has officially revealed its first trailer, key visual, and main cast details. According to AnimeCorner, the series will premiere in October 2025.
The trailer shows a laid-off mage stepping into a new life and the 'cheat'-like powers he gains in the process. The key visual depicts the protagonist alongside his new friends against the backdrop of a fantasy world. The visual reflects both adventure and a light comedic tone. According to reports, the series is being produced by Studio EIGHT BIT (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Blue Lock).
The voice actor bringing the protagonist mage Lucius to life is Kaito Ishikawa (Teruki Hanazawa in Mob Psycho 100, Tenya Iida in My Hero Academia). The cast also includes Akari Kitō (Nadeshiko in Yuru Camp, Ikuyo in Bocchi the Rock!) as the half-elf Misha who joins the protagonist, and Yūichi Nakamura (Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen, Genos in One Punch Man) as the mysterious swordsman Zephyr. The director is Yoshinobu Tokumoto (who has worked as assistant director on series at the same studio).
The light novel that forms the basis of the series is written by Shirōkage and illustrated by Cuway. Originally published on the Shousetsuka ni Narō platform in 2021, the work quickly gained popularity and was turned into a printed book. The story follows Lucius, who is unfairly kicked out of an adventurer's guild, as he discovers his 'cheat-granting' magic and builds a new life. Offering a familiar 'underdog to empowerment' formula for fans of the genre, the series stands out with humor, action, and warm character relationships.
In the anime world, the layoff theme has become a popular subgenre in recent years; this series, which parallels works like “The Unwanted Undead Adventurer” and “Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement”, stands out for its focus on 'cheat' mechanics. The trailer has been praised for its visual quality and action scenes, and fans are expecting more footage and a potential release date announcement before October. In addition to the new trailer, the series' theme songs are likely to be announced soon. If you don't want to miss this second-chance story, mark your calendars for October 2025!
