Starting in Tokyo: 'Theatre Anime Seminar 2026' Discusses the Past and Future of Animation

Tokyo's Theatre Shinjuku, one of the hearts of Japanese animation, is hosting an unmissable event for animation fans this summer. Starting June 27, the seminar series "Theatre Anime Seminar 2026: The Current State of Anime" will be held once a month, consisting of a total of six sessions. Before the series, on the night of June 13-14, an introductory event called "Odessa Midnight Movies [vol.35] Late Night Opening! Anime Seminar Introduction" will take place.
As part of the event, moviegoers will have the opportunity to watch the 4K restoration of "Wings of Honneamise" (Oneamisu no Tsubasa), one of the milestones of anime history. This 1987 cult sci-fi film is known as Gainax studio's first feature-length production and still receives great acclaim for its revolutionary visual style. The screening of the 4K version will offer a rare experience for both old fans and new generations of viewers.
The seminar series is designed to address the current state of the anime industry, production processes, the impact of digital transformation, and future trends. Speakers are expected to include leading directors, producers, and academics from the industry. Each session will focus on a theme, and participants will have an interactive experience through Q&A sections. Such academically oriented events are part of an approach that treats anime not only as entertainment but also as an art and cultural form, especially in Japan.
For anime fans, this seminar series means the chance to enjoy classic works on the big screen on one hand, and to hear about the industry's present and future from experts on the other. Particularly, the 4K screening of a classic like "Wings of Honneamise" stands out as one of the most attractive program elements of the event. The monthly frequency of the series will allow participants to regularly obtain up-to-date information. Tickets and the detailed program are expected to be announced on Theatre Shinjuku's official website in the coming weeks.
