TV Asahi Announces Short Animation Brand PicoAni: First Series 'Shirotan'

TV Asahi has announced that it is creating a brand specifically for short animations for the first time. This new initiative, called PicoAni (ピコアニ), is the channel's first official brand for short-format content. The first series centers on Shirotan, a character that has become a phenomenon in Japan.
Shirotan originally emerged as a character brand in 2017. This cute creature, resembling a white, round seal, gained a large fan base especially through stationery products and toys. Now, it is being adapted into a short animation series under TV Asahi's PicoAni brand. The lead voice role will be taken by Yuki Aoi, known for unforgettable roles such as Homura Akemi in Madoka Magica and Megumin in KonoSuba. Aoi will bring a voice that is both adorable and energetic to Shirotan.
The birth of the PicoAni brand is seen as part of TV Asahi's strategy to respond to the growing demand for short content on digital and mobile platforms. Although the channel is previously known for its feature-length anime series and films, this time it aims to reach viewers with shorter episodes that can easily fit into daily life. This move comes at a time when platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll are also investing in the short anime genre. It has not yet been announced exactly when PicoAni will launch or how many episodes it will consist of, but the Shirotan series is expected to be released within 2025.
This anime adaptation of Shirotan is designed to appeal not only to children but also to adult fans. The involvement of an experienced voice actress like Yuki Aoi raises the quality bar of the series. Although Aoi has previously voiced roles in various short animations, Shirotan will be a first for her: a lead role entirely focused on cuteness and comedy. TV Asahi's move could lead other Japanese television channels to create similar short anime brands. It is eagerly anticipated which new projects will be announced under the PicoAni label in the coming months.
