The Vermilion Mask is originally based on the popular manga by mangaka Kenji Kuroda. The story follows a young hero trying to unravel the secret of the vermilion mask in a world where a secret organization controls people's emotions through masks. The series has 8 volumes in Japan and has been translated into 7 languages on international digital platforms. Kuroda's previously adapted series Shadow Walker was highly acclaimed in 2019.
The anime's production is handled by Studio White Fox, known for its high-quality animation. The director is Masahiro Shinohara, previously known for episodes of Fate/Apocrypha and Re:Zero. Shinohara stated, “We are working to bring the dark atmosphere and symbolism of masks from Kuroda’s manga into a visual spectacle. Every frame you see in the trailer is part of a meticulously crafted storytelling.” The music will be composed by Yuki Kajiura (Demon Slayer, Sword Art Online).
