Virgin Punk’s ‘Clockwork Girl’ Episode to Be Released Digitally

The first episode of Yasuomi Umetsu and the renowned studio Shaft's joint project Virgin Punk, titled Clockwork Girl, will be available for digital purchase in September 2026. The anime had screenings last year in both Japan and the United States.
Virgin Punk was announced as an anthology project combining Umetsu's style, known for dark and stylized action scenes, with Shaft's unique visual language. Umetsu is the creator of cult action works such as Kite and Mezzo Forte. Studio Shaft, on the other hand, has created a unique aesthetic in the anime world with the Monogatari series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. This partnership is a great source of excitement for both Umetsu fans and viewers who love Shaft's visual style.
Although the exact date of the digital release has not been announced yet, it is expected to be available on major platforms in September. While there are not many details about the story of Clockwork Girl at this point, it is widely believed that it will carry the harsh themes and cyberpunk elements from Umetsu's previous works. Additionally, it is known that other episodes are planned for the project's continuation, but no official announcement has been made yet.
This news creates a wave of nostalgia, especially for fans who miss the action OVAs of the 90s and 2000s. Umetsu's return with an original anime project after a long hiatus is one of the industry's significant developments. With the announcement of the digital sale, it is likely that Virgin Punk will reach a wider audience worldwide and perhaps a physical Blu-Ray release will also be considered. Fans are eagerly awaiting September.
