Wareware wa Uchujin Anime Film Announced: An Original Story Bound for Cannes!

The anime world has made an exciting announcement with director Kohei Kadowaki's highly anticipated new original project, Wareware wa Uchujin (We Are Aliens). It has been officially announced that the film will star rising Japanese cinema stars Ryota Bando and Amane Okayama. The first teaser visual and trailer released alongside the announcement gave viewers their first look at the film's melancholic yet intriguing atmosphere. Scheduled for release in 2026, the production has already managed to attract attention on the international stage.
The film's story centers on two friends named Tsubasa and Gyotaro, who were very close in elementary school but drifted apart due to jealousy and misunderstandings. The journey that begins with the reunion of these two friends, who have been scattered to very different points in life after 30 years, questions the meaning of life and the complexity of human relationships. Director Kohei Kadowaki does not just sit in the director's chair for this project; he also takes on many critical roles such as screenplay, planning, storyboarding, and editing, fully reflecting his personal vision in the film.
On the technical side, there is a true star-studded lineup. The film's music is composed by the famous producer Yaffle, known for his work with giants like Fujii Kaze and Kenshi Yonezu. The production process is based on a very interesting collaboration; the Japanese film label NOTHING NEW and the French animation studio Miyu Productions (known for Ghost Cat Anzu) have joined forces. This international partnership aims to add universal depth to the film's visual language.
Wareware wa Uchujin has achieved great success even before its release by being selected for the prestigious "Directors' Fortnight" section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival. This is a rare honor for an original anime film and is seen as a testament to the production's artistic quality. Additionally, a crowdfunding campaign of 8 million yen has been launched on Motion Gallery to further enhance the project's quality and reach a wider audience. With both its artistic depth and strong cast, this film is a candidate to be one of the most talked-about animations of 2026.
