New Original Anime with an All-Star Cast from Wit Studio: LONA is Coming in 2027!
Wit Studio, one of the most prestigious studios in the anime world, is coming forward with a new original project that will excite fans. This new science fiction series, titled LONA (Laboratory of Optics and Neural Analysis), is preparing to meet audiences in the spring of 2027. Along with the announcement, the studio also shared the first promotional videos and visuals reflecting the mysterious atmosphere of the project.
LONA takes viewers to a ruined world in the near future. The story revolves around strange events where "people who should be dead are attacking the living." The Laboratory of Optics and Neural Analysis (LONA), tasked with solving this mystery, analyzes the brains of the deceased to bring their final memories and regrets to light. The series stars researcher Ao (voiced by Minako Kotobuki) and her intern Sango (voiced by Anna Nagase), while Fuka Izumi will bring the facility's mascot Mugen to life.
The team behind the production is described as a true "dream team." Sitting in the director's chair is Takashi Katagiri, who achieved great success with the Spy x Family Code: White film. The screenplay and original story are entrusted to Akiko Nogi, one of Japan's most famous television screenwriters, known for hit productions such as Unnatural and MIU404. Nogi stated that this project is a first for her and that she is looking forward to using the limitless power of expression offered by the anime world. Additionally, the fact that character designs are being handled by Posuka Demizu, the artist of The Promised Neverland, raises expectations for the series' visual quality to the peak.
Wit Studio has made a name for itself in recent years with successful original productions such as Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song- and Great Pretender. LONA, which has been in development since 2020, is a candidate to be one of the studio's most ambitious works in this field. Director Takashi Katagiri described the excitement he felt when he first read Nogi's script as a "once-in-a-lifetime event," and added that the facility where the story takes place was designed with inspiration from the real SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. Blending science fiction and psychological depth, this production looks set to be one of the most talked-about anime of 2027.
