Yoshitaka Amano's ZAN Anime Project Announces Team of Mechanical Anime Masters

Yoshitaka Amano's long-in-development ZAN anime project has finally announced its creative team. The project brings together legendary names of the mechanical anime genre. Masashi Ikeda and Tōru Yoshida will take on the directing duties, while Ryōsuke Takahashi will serve as the general script supervisor. This trio consists of names who have left their mark on cult works such as Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Armored Trooper Votoms, and Blue Gender in the past.
The ZAN project was initially announced in 2021 as a multimedia initiative. Described as an original science fiction universe, the project combines Amano's unique gothic and fantasy drawing aesthetic with mechanical designs. The story is set in the distant future, in a world rising from the remnants of an ancient war, centering on a female warrior with mysterious powers. Amano's visual legacy from works such as Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D, and Angel's Egg is considered one of ZAN's biggest attractions.
The newly announced team has a deep background in the mechanical anime genre. Masashi Ikeda is known for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and After War Gundam X in the 1990s, while Tōru Yoshida served as assistant director on productions such as Blue Gender and Gundam Seed Destiny. Ryōsuke Takahashi is known as the creator of realistic mecha series like Armored Trooper Votoms, Panzer World Galient, and Gasaraki. The gathering of this trio signals that ZAN will offer not only a visual feast but also a deep military and political story.
The project, which has yet to announce its release date and studio information, is considered Amano's biggest anime collaboration to date. The artist previously said about the project, "ZAN is a story where I push the limits of my imagination, combining mechanics and mysticism." It looks like 2026 will be an exciting year for mecha anime fans and Amano enthusiasts. In the coming months, a trailer, studio announcement, and potential release date are expected.
