A Major Exhibition in Kyoto: "Zen and Ghibli" Opens Its Doors!
We have exciting news for Studio Ghibli fans! The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art will host a unique exhibition titled Zen and Ghibli (Zen to Ghibli) from October 3 to December 6, 2026. This special event aims to offer visitors a different perspective by blending the enchanting world of Ghibli with the profound philosophy of Zen Buddhism. The exhibition will not just be an art show, but an experiential space designed for those who want to explore the spiritual depth behind Ghibli films.
The famous actress Yuriko Ishida, who is no stranger to the world of Ghibli, has been selected as the "support leader" for the exhibition. Ishida provided the voice for the character San in the legendary film Princess Mononoke and Miki Hokuto in From Up on Poppy Hill. Ishida expressed her pride in being part of this project, stating that it is exciting to explore the connection between the peaceful and profound meaning within Ghibli works and Zen.
So, why Zen and Ghibli? Many themes in the works of Studio Ghibli co-founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, such as respect for nature, living in the moment, and the concept of "ma" (space/interval), overlap with Zen teachings. The exhibition is based on the book Zen no Kotoba to Ghibli, which stems from dialogues between producer Toshio Suzuki and Zen monk Shinsuke Hosokawa. Focusing particularly on Miyazaki's latest masterpiece The Boy and the Heron, the exhibition will reveal how Zen principles such as "not distinguishing between good and evil," "observing without judgment," and "accepting things as they are" are woven into the films.
Within the scope of the exhibition, visitors will have the chance to see calligraphy works penned by Toshio Suzuki himself, massive reproductions of iconic scenes from the films, and special video content. Furthermore, in the second phase starting on December 17, 2026, the works of the famous Edo-period Zen master Hakuin Ekaku will also be exhibited from a Ghibli perspective.
