Jujutsu Kaisen Becomes the Best-Selling Adult Graphic Novel in the US for June

Jujutsu Kaisen took the American graphic novel market by storm last month. Rising to the number one spot on Bookscan's June 2024 Adult Graphic Novel list, the series once again highlighted the growing popularity of manga in the West. It wasn't just Jujutsu Kaisen; a total of 17 manga titles, including Chainsaw Man, One Piece, Demon Slayer, Dandadan, Blue Lock, and Gachiakuta, also managed to make the list.
According to Bookscan data, manga has been shaking the throne of superhero comics in this list aimed at adult readers in recent years. This success of Jujutsu Kaisen is proof of how solid a global fan base the universe created by Gege Akutami has reached. Although the series ended its Weekly Shonen Jump adventure, which began in 2018, in 2024, its momentum in physical and digital sales has not slowed down at all.
The presence of manga from different genres on the list, such as The Summer Hikaru Died, Witch Hat Atelier, and The Apothecary Diaries, shows how wide the range of American readers' interest in manga genres has spread. Works in the romantic comedy, fantasy, and supernatural action genres, in particular, are becoming increasingly popular among adult readers.
This list is also a reflection of how Japanese popular culture is changing mainstream media consumption habits in the US. Manga is no longer just for young readers, but has become a staple for the 18+ demographic as well. Jujutsu Kaisen's top spot, along with speculation about upcoming new seasons and films, signals that the series will continue to be talked about frequently in the coming months.
