Cast and Release Date Announced for Live-Action Film Adaptation of Look Back

Exciting developments are unfolding for the live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's one-volume manga masterpiece Look Back. The lead actors and release date have been officially announced. According to Japanese media outlet Natalie, Natsuki Deguchi will play Fujino, and Ayuka Maki will play Kyomoto. The film will premiere in Japan on September 11, 2024.
A first promotional video showcasing the performances of the two young actresses, as well as two teaser visuals, have also been released. Natsuki Deguchi (21) is known for the drama series The Journalist and the film Kamisama no Iu Toori, while Ayuka Maki (22) has drawn attention for her roles in The Asadas and Asakusa Kid. The duo is expected to bring the creative friendship between Fujino and Kyomoto to the screen.
Published by Fujimoto after gaining global fame with Chainsaw Man, Look Back was released as a single-chapter one-shot on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ platform in 2021 and quickly garnered widespread acclaim. The manga tells the intersecting paths of Fujino, who starts drawing manga in elementary school, and Kyomoto, who draws while staying at home, and how their lives change after a tragedy. The work won the Best Short Manga award at the Kodansha Manga Awards in 2022, and was also nominated for the Harvey Awards in the U.S.
The live-action adaptation is directed by Kotaro Hirano. Hirano has previously directed series such as Our Last Crusade and Rent-A-Girlfriend, and has also worked as a screenwriter. The film is produced by Kadokawa Daiei Studio and will be distributed by Toei Company. It is reported that Fujimoto himself is involved in the project as a consultant.
An anime film adaptation of the manga, previously produced by Studio Durian, was released in Japan in 2022 and garnered worldwide acclaim. It is said that the live-action version will stay true to the original story but with some expanded scenes. Fans are eagerly anticipating how this emotionally deep work by Fujimoto will be interpreted on the big screen. More cast announcements and new trailers are expected in the coming weeks.
